Three step blueprint to find purpose and mid-career fulfillment | Bernie Borges

My 3-Step Blueprint for Finding Purpose and Mid-Career Fulfillment

Not long ago, I found myself in a place that might sound familiar to you. I had a successful career on paper with a good title, solid compensation, and long tenure, but inside, I felt stuck. Unfulfilled. Like I was climbing a ladder that was leaning against the wrong wall. Maybe you can relate.

That inner tension led me on a deeply personal journey that ultimately inspired me to birth the Fulfilled@Work Academy™. I recently hosted a webinar titled “Gain Clarity & Fulfillment in Your Career: Unlock Your Path Forward,” where I transparently shared my journey and the process I now teach others to help them find alignment, energy, and a sense of purpose at work and beyond.

This blog post captures the key takeaways from that webinar. If you’re feeling stuck or unfulfilled in your career, I hope what I share here helps you begin to unlock your own purpose and path forward.

It’s Not About a New Job. It’s About a New Perspective.

Let me be clear: this process isn’t about job-hopping or chasing the next title. It’s about understanding what fulfillment really means to you, and how to build a life and career that aligns with that.

I started the webinar by polling the webinar attendees. 100% said they felt stuck or frustrated in their careers. That’s no coincidence. So many of us follow traditional career advice: chase promotions, focus on the paycheck, work harder. But this path often ignores our core values and deeper aspirations, causing us to feel like “something is off.”

The Three Shifts That Changed My Life

I’ve condensed my journey into three critical mindset shifts that helped me, and now can help others go from stuck to finding purpose.

1. Embrace Fulfillment as a Strategy, Not a Luxury

Fulfillment is the second most powerful human emotion after love. It’s tied to purpose and impact, and once you feel it, it becomes unshakable.

I encourage everyone to reflect not just on their careers, but across the five pillars of life:

  • Health (physical and mental)
  • Fitness (how you function daily)
  • Career (your work life)
  • Relationships (with family, friends, and colleagues)
  • Legacy (your impact today, not someday)

Only by looking at your life holistically can you identify where you have fulfillment and where it’s missing.

2. Incremental Progress is the Goal

Career change doesn’t require a dramatic leap. I started building my new path by committing to just one hour each morning to work on becoming a leadership speaker, my career transformation goal.

If you want to create change, focus on:

  • A clear vision
  • Small, consistent actions
  • Committed time
  • Measurable progress

You don’t need to quit your job tomorrow. You just need to set a goal and start taking action that you can track and incrementally measure over time.

3. Don’t Go It Alone

This was the hardest lesson for me. I tried to navigate a career transformation solo, and I stalled. Real momentum came when I built a support system in a mastermind group that I lead. This is a group of my peers who meet bi-weekly to support each other and hold each other accountable to do the things we say we’re going to do.

One of the most powerful forces in growth is someone in a peer group who will ask:
“Did you do that thing you said you were going to do?”

My “Aha” Moment: Values and Fulfillment Were Misaligned

The turning point came when I sat down with a blank sheet of paper and rated my fulfillment across the five life pillars. Then I listed my core values and assessed how well I was living in alignment with each one.

The misalignment was glaring. I valued impact, but my job, while respectable, wasn’t touching lives in the way I craved.

That moment of clarity led to the creation of the Values & Fulfillment Alignment Guide, which I now use in my workshops and give away for free. It’s a simple, powerful tool that’s helped many people see where they’re out of sync, and what they can do about it.

What’s Next?

If you’re feeling stuck or unfulfilled, I invite you to download the Values & Fulfillment Alignment Guide. Use it as a mirror. See where your values and your current life intersect, or don’t.

Get the Support You Deserve

I also offer a three-hour, interactive workshop (intensive) where we walk through this process together in a small group. I call it the Clarity to Fulfillment™ Intensive. It’s a safe space where you can reflect, share, and plan your next steps with guidance and support using the Values & Fulfillment Guide as your compass. Go here to register for this 3-hour workshop.

Fulfillment isn’t just possible. It’s essential. And the first step is to get clear on what truly matters to you.
